Restraining Pollution in Jakarta by Planting Mangroves with Transjakarta and CarbonEthics

Mangroves for Improving Environmental Quality and Air Pollution in Jakarta

Mangroves and Environmental Sustainability

The increasing level of air pollution in Jakarta has become a major concern for its residents, who have felt its negative impact on their health and quality of life. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital has reached the "Unhealthy" level, categorizing Jakarta as having unhealthy air quality. Jakarta even once ranked second as one of the cities with the worst air quality in the world, previously being fourth. The decline in air quality and the rising pollution levels have triggered an urgent need for concrete actions to address this issue. In response to this situation, Transjakarta, in collaboration with CarbonEthics, has initiated a mangrove planting campaign through #BersihBerdayaBestari to reduce the climate change and air pollution impact in Jakarta.

Mangrove ecosystems play a crucial role in addressing air pollution. Mangroves also have the ability to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere. Mangroves can absorb and store large amounts of carbon in their bodies and the surrounding soil. Therefore, the preservation of mangroves not only mitigates the damage caused by climate change but also helps combat the increase in global temperatures by reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Furthermore, mangrove ecosystems also have an irreplaceable role in coastal preservation. Mangroves, which are estuarine ecosystems situated between land and the sea, act as natural barriers that protect coastlines from erosion and the adverse effects of tidal waves. The robust roots of mangroves help maintain soil stability and prevent coastal erosion, which often poses a threat to coastal communities.

Mangrove ecosystems also support marine biodiversity by serving as breeding grounds and shelters for various fish species, birds, and other marine organisms. By preserving mangroves, we are safeguarding a healthy marine ecosystem that is a crucial resource for the livelihoods of coastal communities and for sustainable marine ecosystems.

The #BersihBerdayaBestari campaign is a collaboration between CarbonEthics and Transjakarta to address climate change and pollution in Jakarta

The #BersihBerdayaBestari campaign is a collaboration between CarbonEthics and Transjakarta in an effort to address climate change, pollution, and heat in Jakarta. This collaboration involves the conservation of mangroves on Harapan Island, Kepulauan Seribu.

Transjakarta, as the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in Southeast Asia and a vital mass transportation mode supporting the activities of the capital's residents, has joined forces with CarbonEthics in the #BersihBerdayaBestari campaign to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and preserve the coastal ecosystem's sustainability in Indonesia.

Through this initiative, every individual and institution can participate in preserving Jakarta by donating and planting mangroves. CarbonEthics and Transjakarta have disseminated information at every Transjakarta bus stop. The collected mangrove saplings will be planted at CarbonEthics' planting site on Harapan Island in the Thousand Islands.

By collaborating with CarbonEthics, Transjakarta plays a pivotal role as an agent of change in environmental sustainability within the capital. Through the #BersihBerdayaBestari campaign, CarbonEthics and Transjakarta collectively contribute to climate change mitigation and the improvement of environmental quality in Jakarta, taking tangible steps toward a greener and more sustainable future.

Benefits of Participating in the #BersihBerdayaBestari Campaign

The conservation of mangroves through #BersihBerdayaBestari contributes to the sustainability of coastal ecosystems and empowers coastal communities.

Donating to mangrove conservation through #BersihBerdayaBestari provides significant benefits to individuals and institutions involved in this campaign.

This campaign directly impacts environmental preservation. Each mangrove tree planted contributes to the maintenance of diverse coastal ecosystems. Mangroves serve as breeding grounds for various marine species and birds. Therefore, donating through #BersihBerdayaBestari helps maintain the balance and sustainability of these ecosystems.

In addition to its environmental impact, the #BersihBerdayaBestari campaign also makes a significant contribution to social change. The mangrove planting activities through #BersihBerdayaBestari involve local communities, especially mangrove farmers and coastal residents. Every donation is not only used for mangrove planting in the Thousand Islands, but it has a much broader impact.

This donation contributes to increasing the income of local farmers by providing them with climate-related skills training and ensuring their safety during the planting process. Additionally, local farmers will receive protective gear and the necessary planting equipment. By donating to mangroves through #BersihBerdayaBestari, individuals and institutions also participate in empowering local communities that depend on coastal ecosystems for their livelihoods.

Furthermore, donating to mangroves has a positive impact on the global climate. Mangroves are known as efficient carbon stores, so helping to preserve intact mangroves contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and preserving coastal ecosystems and their biodiversity.

Participating in #BersihBerdayaBestari donations is not just about giving donations; it's also about playing a role in environmental preservation, empowering coastal communities, and helping address climate change.
