Allianz Indonesia Invites to Participate in World Cleanup Day and Plants 2,000 Mangroves

Jakarta, 23 September 2021 – As a form of appreciation towards the environment, Allianz Indonesia, through Yayasan Allianz Peduli (YAP) has again participated in the World Cleanup Day 2021 (WCD) initiative through various activities, starting from the planting of 2,000 mangrove trees in Pulau Harapan, Kepulauan Seribu – while empowering the local community and involving citizens to donate to this initiative. Mangrove forests are one of the ecosystems with many benefits for the environment as well as the biota. Planting mangroves can help nurture nature, most especially in coastal communities.

“Allianz’s participation in World Cleanup Day 2021 is a form of our continuous commitment to and care for the environment. As we know, the world is facing a climate crisis that is driven by global warming. As a result, we have constantly educated and inspired the general public to care for and nurture the environment through a range of programs or campaigns that we have initiated, such as the planting of mangrove trees, educational webinars regarding the environment and its people, as well as the empowerment of the community of mangrove farmers and waste management facilities,” said Sunadi, the representative of Yayasan Allianz Peduli.

This year represents the third year for YAP in which they have done mangrove planting. However, there is something different from the years past this year, as the public can personally participate in WCD 2021 through the ‘Instagram Photo Challenge - Mangrove Donation’. Every post that is uploaded will be converted into the planting of one mangrove tree. The guidelines are as follows; upload a picture that shows care for the environment, whether it be cleaning up a communal area, planting trees, managing waste, recycling, and many more.

Besides being able to share stories through social media, the public can also contribute by donating mangrove trees and supporting activities held by Allianz Indonesia through YAP. This is done by purchasing the official Allianz Indonesia merchandise at https://azboutique.gifted.id/, such as reusable water bottles and utensils to reduce single-use plastic waste. For every Rp 150,000.00 spent, a mangrove tree will be adopted. The public that has participated in donating the mangrove tree will be awarded an electronic certificate. This event does not only take place during World Cleanup Day, but the public is able to contribute to saving the Earth by using an electronic insurance policy (polis) in which one registered electronic insurance policy (polis) equates to one mangrove tree planted.

Furthermore, YAP also collaborated with Bobo magazine to hold a virtual class for children titled “Membuat Sampah Menjadi Kreasi Mainan Daur Ulang” (Upcycling Waste into Recycled Toy) which is a class that teaches children how to upcycle waste into a valuable toy. Other than utilizing waste at home, this activity is also beneficial to hone the creativity of the public, especially the next generation in terms of managing waste.

This waste management problem also became part of the discussion in the World Cleanup Day webinar on 18 September 2021, in which the event is held together with CarbonEthics. This webinar invited the CEO & Founder of Rekosistem, Ernest C. Layman, “One of the reasons we established Rekosistem is that waste management system in Indonesia is still not optimal. Rekosistem came to increase waste management productivity by connecting people with recycling partners in which the accumulated waste will be recycled with clear data transparency and reward points that motivate people to sort their waste and adopt a zero-waste lifestyle in their homes”.

Moreover, Mustafa, Leader of the Farmer community in Pulau Harapan, who is active in the planting of mangroves has expressed his concerns regarding waste that has ended up in the ocean. According to Mustafa, maintaining an environment without waste is also important as waste can disturb the growing process of mangrove trees. Mustafa has also emphasized the importance and existence of mangrove ecosystems, as they are one of the mitigation strategies against the climate crisis, which disproportionately impacts coastal communities.

A sustainable environment also has to be supported by the quality of human resources that manages that said environment. The planting and donating initiatives by YAP and Yayasan CarbonEthics Indonesia also increase public awareness, education, and empower mangrove farmers up until this coming December, so that mangrove farmers can increase the quality of their production. Asides from that, YAP has also educated the public regarding waste management facilities (Bank Sampah), while correlating this to the communities of Kepulauan Seribu in order to maintain the cleanliness of coastal environments.

The World Cleanup Day 2021 webinar is also the closing of a series of activities initiated by YAP. Joint efforts to protect the environment as our common home are important, corporations must also contribute to environmental conservation. This is realized by Allianz Indonesia through CSR programs, making sustainable business strategies, and supporting local and surrounding communities.

Allianz Indonesia through Yayasan Allianz Peduli together with CarbonEthics Indonesia Foundation also conducts education and empowerment activities for mangrove farmers until the coming December, so that farmers can improve the quality of their production. In addition, YAP also provides education about waste banks with a personal, door-to-door, approach to the people of the Kepulauan Seribu so that the coastal environment is kept clean.

World Cleanup Day 2021 closed with a webinar attended by Arini Bachtiar, Head of Corporate Events & CSR Allianz Indonesia, The Leader of the Mangrove Farmers in Pulau Harapan, Mustafa as well as the CEO & Co-Founder Rekosistem, Ernest C. Layman with the moderator from CarboEthics, Byanmara. This webinar was held to learn more about the current state of the Earth, and how we can save the Earth through mangrove ecosystems and household waste management.
