CarbonEthics, in collaboration with RMIT University and the International Internships program, is undertaking a significant initiative to address the pressing issue of clean water access in Tanjungpakis, Karawang, Indonesia. This project focuses on seawater desalination research, aiming to develop sustainable solutions for the local population suffering from inadequate drinking water supply due to brackish water and limited rainfall.
Water Condition in Tanjungpakis
Tanjungpakis faces a critical water crisis, exacerbated by the regional drinking water company's inability to provide services to the area. The lack of rainfall further complicates the situation, leaving residents with limited options for accessing clean water. Existing seawater desalination efforts have not been sufficient to meet the needs of all local inhabitants, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions.
Collaborative Research Efforts
To tackle this challenge, CarbonEthics has partnered with RMIT University and the International Internships program. This collaboration involves RMIT engineering students who are working on developing a prototype for a seawater desalination facility. The research is being conducted in Dusun Bungin, Karangjaya, and Pakis Satu, with a focus on creating a financially viable and replicable technology that can sustainably provide clean water to the community.
The project is aligned with broader global goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those aimed at ensuring access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030. By leveraging renewable energy sources and waste heat, the initiative seeks to minimize the environmental impact typically associated with traditional desalination processes, which often rely on fossil fuels and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
