Project Overview
Tanjungpakis, once known as the "Dollar Village" for its thriving economy, is a coastal community with a rich cultural and natural heritage. Over time, the village has faced challenges such as coastal erosion, illegal sand mining, and changes in biodiversity. Situated at the mouth of the Citarum River, the village is home to the Sunda-Betawi Tribe and a wide variety of species.
This project aims to address environmental challenges through nature-based solutions that integrate ecological restoration with socio-economic empowerment. By planting mangroves, installing wavebreakers, and developing sustainable livelihoods, this initiative not only protects the coastline but also fosters resilience among the local population.
Through collaborations with corporate partners and academic institutions, this project goes beyond simply planting trees. It aims to create a lasting impact by addressing climate change and enhancing biodiversity while equipping local communities with practical knowledge to drive sustainable growth.
The Impact
Environmental Impact
Through our mangrove rehabilitation program, we've planted thousands of mangrove trees (Rhizophora mucronata), restoring a significant portion of the project area and sequestering carbon over the long term. These efforts protect the coastline, support marine biodiversity, and strengthen local fisheries. To further combat erosion, we've installed wavebreaker structures, safeguarding both the environment and the livelihoods of the coastal community.

Local Women Entreprenuers
Kawan Ibu was established as a result of our training program under the Farmers Exchange Program in Indramayu in 2023, bringing together six women from Dusun Bungin. In 2024, Kawan Ibu partnered with CarbonEthics as a women's entrepreneur group and now produces mangrove-based foods such as dodol (a traditional sweet snack), mangrove leaf sticks, and mangrove juice, turning the mangroves their community is restoring into a source of income for the local women's community.
Waste Management
We've implemented waste management solutions for the coastal community, including regular beach clean-ups and the establishment of a central waste bank, creating a sustainable recycling system for the area.
Community Empowerment
Through our training sessions, we have equipped residents with skills in sustainable aquaculture, mangrove-based products, and ecosystem restoration, opening new sources of income beyond fishing and farming. Partnerships with the Elang Laut Farmers Group, Karang Taruna, and Kawan Ibu have created alternative livelihoods through mangrove-based products like batik dyes, soaps, crafts, and local foods, while collaborations with Planet Ban and RMIT University have brought technical expertise from wavebreakers to seawater desalination research.
Public Infrastructure
Additionally, we've improved infrastructure through public road refurbishments and cooperative investments, ensuring the benefits of our work are widely shared. Each initiative contributes to a model of sustainable development, demonstrating how ecological restoration and community empowerment go hand in hand to create lasting change in Tanjungpakis.
