Jakarta, 5th February 2024 - The Directorate of Inland Water and Mangrove Rehabilitation (RPDM) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry hosted a workshop to strengthen the Regional Mangrove Groups (KKMD) and community development for sustainable and independent protection and management of mangrove ecosystems. The workshop involved various stakeholders, such as the regional government, academic experts, private institutions, and CarbonEthics.
Paying attention to the vital role of mangrove ecosystems for the environment, society and global commitments, the Indonesian Government is making efforts to increase and maintain mangrove ecosystem land cover, including through mangrove rehabilitation activities. One strategy to encourage the protection and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems is through institutional strengthening at the national regional government level, institutions at the village level and site communities, and non-governmental institutions.
Taking these matters into account, the Directorate of Inland Water and Mangrove Rehabilitation (RPDM) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through the Mangrove for Coastal Resilience (M4CR) program, held a workshop with the theme "Strengthening Regional Mangrove Working Groups (KKMD) and Community Development for Sustainability and Independence Mangrove Ecosystem Protection and Management .”
The workshop aimed to provide structured materials for formulating and implementing policies for the protection and management of mangrove ecosystems from a social aspect, disseminate materials for preparing recommendations for strengthening the KKMD and community development from a social aspect, and provide materials and networks for development, communication, learning, and collaboration for the KKMD and community in the efforts to protect and manage mangrove ecosystems.
“Various challenges and tactical solutions are shared to strengthen KKMD across all provinces in Indonesia. While many aspects are similar, the most effective takeaway to sustain good performance is collaboration and reflecting on the interventions that have been implemented,” said Darama as Community Development and Social Impact Manager, representing CarbonEthics for the workshop to strengthen the Regional Mangrove Groups (KKMD).
CarbonEthics showcased our local community products during the workshop, such as Mangrove Soap, Mangrove Batik & Eco-Print, and Mangrove Tea. Dompak Batik, a natural and sustainable batik made from mangrove bark, attracted the attention of international delegates at the 8th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai.
