CarbonEthics is honored to be invited to the signing of the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment (Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup - Badan Pengendalian Lingkungan Hidup / KLH - BPLH) and Gold Standard Foundation, today, 8 May 2025. The MRA was signed by Ir. Ary Sudijanto, M.S.E. on behalf of Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment, and Margaret Kim as the Chief Executive Officer of Gold Standard Foundation.
This milestone marks a significant step in Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to build a credible, transparent, and effective carbon market.
Here are the impacts of MRA:
- Actors can choose Gold Standard certification for their projects. However, carbon projects in Indonesia must also be registered in Indonesia’s National Registry System for Climate Change (SRN PPI).
- To streamline the process, Project Design Document (PDD) based on international standards may be used as part of the documentation to generate Indonesia’s Carbon Emission Reduction certification (SPE GRK).
- Assessment criteria used by SPE GRK and Gold Standard will be harmonized to simplify project evaluations.
- This MRA also opens opportunity for mutual recognition of methodologies between SPE GRK and Gold Standard.
In his keynote speech, Indonesia’s Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, reaffirms that, “This MRA is not merely an agreement. It is a strategic breakthrough that opens the door for Indonesia's carbon projects to penetrate global markets. It ensures that every conservation effort, emission reduction initiatives, and renewable energy project receive the value they deserve on the world’s stage.”
This MRA signing between Indonesia and Gold Standard is the beginning of Indonesia’s broader strategy to enhance its carbon market’s credibility and marketability by collaborating with international standards. Several other MRAs with globally recognized institutions are currently in progress, reinforcing Indonesia’s commitment to aligning with international best practices and increasing global market access for Indonesia’s carbon market, which further positions the country as a key player in the global effort to combat climate change.
